2009-2011 Deep South Region theme:

“Together as One – Our Hands and Hearts are P.O.W.E.R.”
(Protecting Our World’s Environment and Resources)

2009-2011 National Garden Clubs theme:

“The World Around Us……Love It – Beautify It – Protect It”

The 2009-2011 Deep South Region’s Unified Project endorses, promotes and supports both of these themes.  Deep South garden club members will concentrate on becoming significant advocates for identifying, promoting and utilizing improved, practical techniques for clean, green living in six categories: Homes and Businesses, Gardens – Private and Public, Schools, Communities, Environmental Education and Natural Resources/Ecology.

The Deep South Unified Project: Protecting Our World…Living Green – Living Clean (or POW!) is an innovative environmental program providing activities with varying levels of participation for all garden club members.

Concepts and plans of action for Living Green and Living Clean will be researched and recorded by Deep South Chairmen to be shared with garden club members, who will, in turn, share them with members of their communities.

A concentrated effort will be implemented to educate the youth of our communities on the urgency and necessity of going green and clean NOW and to motivate them to make fundamental changes in their environmental lifestyles while encouraging others (friends, parents, siblings, classmates) to adopt this new ecological agenda.

2009-2011 DEEP SOUTH UNIFIED REGIONAL PROJECT

The Deep South Unified Regional Project "PROTECTING OUR WORLD……LIVING GREEN..LIVING CLEAN", is an invitation for persons of all ages, especially young children and the handicapped, to participate with the G.R.I.T.S. members of the Deep South Region. And in case you are wondering what G.R.I.T.S. stands for ……it is Gardeners Residing In The South.

This project is NOT a fundraiser. It is an initiative to focus awareness on the urgent need to protect our environment and to formulate actions for living green and living clean. One only needs to look around at our streets, roadways, rivers and streams to see the various threats to our environment that occurs.

It is through this project that the members of garden clubs of the Deep South Region of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., hope to develop innovative and more up-to-date ideas to educate and motivate our citizens – of all ages - to protect our world.

Your options are far reaching! Direct your project to homes and business, gardens, schools, environmental education, communities or natural resources/ecology or incorporate some or all of these areas. Encourage your mayors to join in this effort. Have him/her declare a  POW” day.

Information material to peak your interest and to give you some ideas for your project will be provided. The possibilities are limitless!!!! The success of this project totally depends on YOU and your commitment to preserving and protecting the world around us.

Competitive monetary awards are offered for youth, youth club, garden club and state projects.  At the end of this two-year term the comprehensive Deep South Region project will be entered into competition with the other regions of National Garden Clubs, Inc. for the best regional project.  It is very important that each Deep South garden club member participates in order to make this project a tremendous success.

It is our goal that through your participation in this project, you will gain additional insight and success personally as we endeavor to protect our world by living green and living clean - and that our WORLD will be a better place as a result of the activities and accomplishments of the project.

Thank you,
